CAGD Confirms Restoration of Salaries for Over 2,000 Public Sector Workers After Verification.

The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has announced that the salaries of more than 2,000 public sector workers, which were earlier put on hold, will be restored after the completion of a verification process and the necessary clearance from the Audit Service.

According to the Department, the salary suspension was a temporary measure taken in line with recommendations from the Auditor-General and in full compliance with Public Financial Management (PFM) regulations. The move, it explained, was part of efforts to strengthen payroll integrity and ensure that only duly verified workers remain on the government payroll.

Speaking in an interview with Citi News on Monday, 2 February 2026, the Controller and Accountant-General, Kwasi Agyei, stressed that the Department remains committed to transparency, accountability, and the prompt payment of legitimate salaries in accordance with PFM rules.

He disclosed that a headcount exercise conducted by the Auditor-General last year revealed discrepancies involving several public sector workers. Following this, the Auditor-General formally notified the CAGD that about 6,000 officers had failed to take part in the exercise and therefore should not receive salary payments until their status was confirmed.

Mr Agyei, however, clarified that further internal assessments by the Department significantly reduced the number of affected workers. He explained that issues surrounding many of the names initially flagged had already been addressed before the Auditor-General’s directive was fully implemented.

“After our internal review, we realised that only about 2,000 officers were actually affected, as the challenges associated with the remaining officers had been resolved earlier,” he stated.

He added that the suspension of salaries was meant to create room for proper verification and avoid any irregular payments. As part of the process, affected institutions were formally notified and their staff directed to present themselves to the Audit Service for validation.

Mr Agyei assured that once the verification exercise is completed and official confirmation is received from the Auditor-General, the salaries of the affected workers will be promptly reactivated. He reiterated that the Department’s actions are guided by the need to protect public funds while ensuring fairness to all verified public sector workers.
