Who is a Physician Assistant? Schools, Training and Career Opportunities in Ghana
If you've ever visited a hospital or clinic in Ghana and been attended to by someone other than a doctor, there's a good chance you met a Physician Assistant. They are some of the most important, yet most overlooked, professionals in our health system, and more young people are beginning to ask what it takes to become one.
Who Exactly is a Physician Assistant?
A Physician Assistant (PA) is a trained healthcare professional who diagnoses illness, develops and manages treatment plans, prescribes medication, and often performs minor procedures, usually working alongside or under the supervision of a qualified physician. In Ghana, the profession actually covers three related groups regulated by the Medical and Dental Council:
- PA-Medical (formerly known as Medical Assistants)
- PA-Dental (Community Oral Health Officers)
- PA-Anaesthesia (also known as nurse anaesthetists)
PAs were introduced to help close the gap created by Ghana's doctor-to-patient ratio, which remains one of the lowest in the world relative to population. In many district hospitals and rural clinics, a Physician Assistant is often the first, and sometimes the only, trained clinician a patient sees. That responsibility has turned the profession into one of the backbones of primary healthcare delivery in the country.
Schools That Offer Physician Assistantship in Ghana
The programme has grown steadily over the past decade, and it's no longer offered only at the traditional public universities. Here are some of the institutions currently training Physician Assistants in Ghana:
- University of Cape Coast (UCC) runs the programme through its Department of Physician Assistant Studies (DPAS), under the School of Medical Sciences. It's a four-year BSc programme and one of the most established in the country.
- Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) also offers a BSc in Physician Assistantship, training students within its College of Health Sciences.
- University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Ho, is a public university dedicated specifically to allied health training, including Physician Assistantship.
- Presbyterian University, Ghana (Asante Akyem Campus, Agogo) runs a four-year BSc Physician Assistantship programme affiliated with KNUST.
- Pentecost University offers a BSc in Physician Assistant Studies designed around primary and specialty care training.
- Radford University College, Accra, offers a BSc in Physician Assistantship for science-track applicants.
- Central University, Accra, also runs the programme through its health sciences track.
- Narh-Bita College, Tema, has run Physician Assistantship training for over a decade, starting originally as an advanced diploma before being upgraded to a full degree programme.
- Kintampo College of Health and Well-Being, Bono East Region, is one of the oldest and most established names in the field. Formerly the Rural Health Training School, it was set up in 1969 and is affiliated with KNUST. It trains PAs in both the Medical and Dental tracks and remains one of the main public institutions producing middle-level health professionals for the country.
- College of Health, Yamfo, in the Ahafo Region, is another public institution offering the BSc Physician Assistantship programme, and its graduates are formally recognised on the Medical and Dental Council's PA register alongside the other schools on this list.
Entry requirements vary slightly by school, but generally applicants need a WASSCE aggregate of 24-36 or better, with credits in English, Mathematics, Integrated Science, and elective science subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Physics). Registered nurses with a diploma or SRN qualification are often eligible for advanced entry or exemptions in some courses, which makes the programme attractive to nurses looking to progress their careers.
What Does the Career Path Look Like?
Once you graduate and get licensed by the Medical and Dental Council, the career path typically follows a structured progression:
- Physician Assistant (Entry level) — your first posting after graduation and licensure
- Senior Physician Assistant — after gaining clinical experience
- Principal Physician Assistant — a more senior supervisory role
- Chief Physician Assistant — the highest rank in the cadre, often involving department-level leadership
Physician Assistants work in a wide range of settings: district and regional hospitals, teaching hospitals, community health centres, private clinics, and increasingly in specialised units like surgery, anaesthesia, and emergency care. Some go on to pursue postgraduate studies, specialise further, or move into health administration, teaching, or research.
Beyond the clinical wards, there's also growing demand for PAs in NGOs, health insurance schemes, and public health programmes, especially given how central they are to primary care delivery in underserved communities.

Physician Assistants in Ghana are placed on different salary levels depending on rank, from entry-level officers to chief-level positions, under the public sector single spine pay structure.
Entry to Senior Level (18L – 19L)
Newly qualified Physician Assistants begin at Level 18L, progressing to Senior Physician Assistant at Level 19L as they gain experience and responsibility on the job.
Principal and Chief Level (20H – 22L)
Principal Physician Assistants sit at Level 20H, while the Chief Physician Assistant grade, the highest rank in the cadre, is placed at Level 22L, reflecting greater supervisory and clinical leadership responsibilities.
