State to Hire 7,000 Teachers from July 1 as Education Minister Targets 50,000 Intake

The Government of Ghana has secured financial clearance to recruit 7,000 teachers nationwide beginning July 1, 2026, in a major move aimed at addressing the increasing shortage of teachers in schools across the country.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, who revealed that the Ghana Education Service (GES) recruitment portal will be opened for qualified applicants as part of efforts to improve teaching and learning outcomes nationwide.

According to the Minister, the recruitment exercise forms part of a broader government plan to employ about 50,000 teachers in the coming years to bridge staffing gaps in basic and second-cycle institutions.

Mr. Iddrisu explained that thousands of schools across the country continue to face serious teacher shortages, especially in deprived and underserved communities. He noted that the new recruitment drive is expected to help reduce pressure on existing teachers while improving quality education delivery.

“Graduates from 2022 to 2025 may apply for placement across the country. Priority will be given to those who are ready and willing to serve in deprived and underserved areas where we have identified significant teacher gaps,” the Minister stated during a press briefing in Accra.

The Minister further assured that the recruitment process will be competitive, transparent, and merit-based to ensure fairness for all applicants.

Government Targets Massive Teacher Recruitment

Beyond the immediate 7,000 recruitment slots, the Ministry of Education is reportedly working toward a larger target of recruiting 50,000 teachers as part of efforts to transform Ghana’s education sector and support expanding enrollment in schools.

The initiative is expected to significantly reduce unemployment among trained teachers while strengthening human resource capacity in public schools.

Education analysts believe the move could also improve teacher-to-student ratios, particularly in rural areas where many schools continue to struggle with inadequate staffing.

Support for Education Sector

The recruitment announcement comes at a time when the government has increased budgetary allocation to the education sector under the 2026 national budget.

According to the 2026 Budget Statement, more than GH¢32 billion has been allocated to the Ministry of Education and its programmes, with additional funding earmarked for Free SHS, capitation grants, school feeding, and teacher trainee allowances.

The budget also includes investments in educational infrastructure and measures aimed at improving learning outcomes across all levels of education.

Teacher Unions React

While many trained teachers have welcomed the announcement, some teacher unions have expressed concerns that the 7,000 recruitment slots may not be enough to fully address the country’s staffing challenges.

Reports indicate that education stakeholders continue to push for increased recruitment to cover the large number of vacancies in schools nationwide.

Nonetheless, the latest announcement has sparked hope among thousands of unemployed trained teachers awaiting posting opportunities.

Expected Application Process

Applicants are expected to apply through the official Ghana Education Service recruitment portal once applications officially open. Eligible candidates will likely be required to submit their certificates, national service details, and other relevant documents during the application process.

The Ministry of Education has urged qualified graduates to prepare ahead of the recruitment exercise and remain alert for official guidelines from GES.

The recruitment exercise is expected to begin officially from July 1, 2026.
